An older system does not have to be rewritten in order to reach a current model. It has to expose its data, and almost all of them do, whether through an API or the database underneath.

A middleware layer sits beside the system and talks to both sides of it, without touching either. The core code stays where it is, which matters most when whoever wrote it left years ago.
The oldest system in the building is usually the one holding the data worth searching.
