Your database can find any record, as long as you already know its reference number. It cannot find the record that answers a question, and that gap is what a vector database closes.
Matching meaning instead of matching text
Text gets turned into numbers, and anything that means something similar ends up sitting near it. A question asked in plain words lands near the records that answer it, even when they share none of the same words.
You may not need a separate one. PostgreSQL does this with an extension, and for most companies that is a smaller change than adding another system to run.
